What Is PDRN in Skincare? The Salmon DNA Ingredient, Explained

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It is a mixture of small DNA fragments, and in skincare it is almost always derived from salmon. You will see it on labels as PDRN, salmon DNA, or sodium DNA. It has moved from Korean clinics into everyday serums, toners and creams faster than almost any ingredient of the last decade, and it now appears across the whole shelf rather than in a single hero product.

This guide covers what PDRN actually is, the honest difference between the clinic version and the version in your bathroom, who it suits, and how to build a routine around it without buying eleven things at once.

The short version

  • PDRN is DNA fragments, usually from salmon, used to support the skin's own repair and hydration processes.
  • Injectable PDRN used in clinics and topical PDRN in a serum are not the same thing and should not be judged by the same evidence.
  • Topical PDRN is best understood as a comfort, hydration and barrier-support ingredient that plays very well with peptides and niacinamide.
  • It is gentle. Most people can use it morning and night alongside almost everything else.

What PDRN actually is

DNA is a long chain. Polydeoxyribonucleotide is what you get when that chain is broken into much shorter pieces, typically somewhere between fifty and two thousand base pairs. Those fragments are purified until essentially no protein remains, which is what makes the ingredient usable on skin.

Why salmon

Two reasons, one biological and one practical. Salmon DNA shares a high degree of sequence similarity with human DNA, which is why it is well tolerated. And salmon milt is an abundant by-product of an existing food industry, which makes it far cheaper and more sustainable to source at scale than most alternatives. Korea's marine biotech sector had the extraction and purification infrastructure already built, which is a large part of why PDRN became a Korean ingredient story rather than a French or American one.

Injectable PDRN versus topical PDRN

This is the part most articles skip, and it matters.

The research that made PDRN famous largely concerns injected polydeoxyribonucleotide, delivered into the dermis by a professional. That is a medical procedure, it is regulated as such, and it places the ingredient directly where it can act.

A PDRN serum is a cosmetic. It sits on and within the upper layers of the skin. PDRN is a relatively large molecule, so how much reaches deeper layers from a topical product is genuinely debated, and formulators use delivery systems, humectants and supporting actives to improve on it.

So what should you expect from a topical? Realistically: better hydration, a calmer and more comfortable barrier, less visible redness, and over weeks a smoother, plumper-looking surface. What you should not expect is the outcome of a clinic course of injections. Any brand implying otherwise is overselling, and in the UAE, cosmetic products are not permitted to make medical claims at all.

What PDRN does for skin

Hydration and barrier comfort

PDRN is strongly water-binding, which is the most immediate and most reliable thing it does. Skin feels cushioned rather than slick. This is why it turns up so often in toners, mists and pads rather than only in expensive serums, and why it pairs naturally with hyaluronic acid. The Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Capsule 100 Serum is built on exactly that pairing.

Redness and post-sun comfort

Anyone living in the Gulf knows the specific combination of strong UV outdoors and aggressively dry air-conditioning indoors, repeated several times a day. That cycle is hard on the barrier, and it shows up as tightness, patchy dryness and reactive flushing rather than as anything dramatic.

PDRN formulas are typically low-irritation and often paired with soothing partners like cica or panthenol, which makes them a sensible everyday layer in this climate. The Medicube PDRN Pink Cica Soothing Toner is the obvious example, combining PDRN with centella.

None of this replaces sunscreen. If you take one thing from this article, take that one.

Firmness and texture, over time

This is the slowest of the three and the one that needs the most patience. Better-hydrated, better-supported skin reflects light differently and creases less obviously, which reads as firmer. Most PDRN products stack peptides on top for this reason rather than relying on PDRN alone. Expect to judge it at eight to twelve weeks, not at two.

PDRN versus the ingredients already in your routine

PDRN is not a replacement for anything. It is a layer that sits comfortably alongside what you already use.

Ingredient Main job Works with PDRN?
PDRN Hydration, barrier comfort, smoothness over time —
Peptides Signal support for firmness and elasticity Excellent. Most PDRN serums already include them.
Niacinamide Tone evenness, oil balance, barrier lipids Excellent. Very common pairing.
Hyaluronic acid Pulls and holds water in the upper layers Excellent. Complementary rather than duplicate.
Retinal / retinol Cell turnover, lines, texture Yes, and PDRN often makes retinoid nights more comfortable.
Vitamin C Antioxidant defence, brightness Yes. Use vitamin C in the morning, PDRN either time.
Exfoliating acids Surface renewal Yes, but separate them. Acids first, then PDRN, and not every night.

Who PDRN suits, and who should hold off

A good fit for: dehydrated and dull skin, skin that feels tight in air-conditioning, sensitive or easily flushed skin, anyone in their late twenties onward starting preventative care, and anyone using retinoids or acids who wants a gentler supporting layer.

Worth pausing on:

  • Fish allergy. Rarely mentioned and worth stating plainly. Purified PDRN is protein-depleted, so reactions are uncommon, but if you have a significant fish or seafood allergy, patch test on your inner forearm for several days first, or speak to a doctor before using it.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. PDRN is not a known concern, but there is little specific data. Run your routine past your doctor, as you would with anything.
  • Active, inflamed breakouts. PDRN will not make these worse, but it also is not the ingredient that will resolve them. Treat the breakout, then layer PDRN alongside it for comfort.
  • Vegan routines. Salmon-derived PDRN is not vegan. Some brands market plant-derived alternatives, which are a different ingredient with a different evidence base.

Building a PDRN routine at three budgets

Starting out: under AED 200

Add PDRN at one step rather than five. A toner or a serum is the sensible entry point.

Going deeper: AED 200 to 500

Here you extend PDRN across more steps and add targeted areas.

The full ritual: device-led

PDRN formulas are frequently designed to be used with a booster device, which is why Medicube sells them as device-and-serum sets rather than separately.

Before spending at this level, it is worth understanding what a home device can and cannot do. We cover that honestly in our guide to at-home beauty devices.

How to layer PDRN correctly

The general rule is thinnest to thickest. A workable order:

  1. Cleanse.
  2. Toner or pad. PDRN can enter here.
  3. Serum. The main PDRN step for most people.
  4. Eye product.
  5. Moisturiser.
  6. Sunscreen, mornings without exception. The Medicube PDRN Pink Tone-Up Sun Cream SPF 50+ keeps PDRN in the final step.

Two practical notes. Apply PDRN serum to slightly damp skin, since it is water-binding and needs water to bind. And do not use PDRN at three separate steps expecting three times the effect. One or two well-chosen products outperform a shelf of them.

How long before you see anything

  • Day one to three: skin feels more comfortable and less tight. This is hydration, and it is real but shallow.
  • Week two to four: less visible redness, makeup sitting better, a more even surface.
  • Week eight to twelve: the texture and firmness changes, if they come, become visible here.

Take a photo in the same light on day one. Memory is an unreliable narrator when it comes to your own face.

Frequently asked questions

Is PDRN the same as salmon DNA?

Effectively yes. Salmon DNA is the marketing name, polydeoxyribonucleotide is the technical one. Some labels also use sodium DNA.

Can I use PDRN every day?

Yes. It is one of the gentler actives and most people use it twice daily without issue.

Can I use PDRN with retinol or retinal?

Yes, and it is a good combination. PDRN's hydrating, soothing character tends to make retinoid use more comfortable. Apply the retinoid, wait a few minutes, then follow with PDRN and moisturiser.

Is PDRN suitable for oily or acne-prone skin?

Generally yes, if you pick a lightweight format. A toner, a fluid serum or pads suit oily skin better than a rich cream.

Does topical PDRN work as well as PDRN injections?

No, and no honest brand should claim it does. They are different delivery routes with different evidence. Topical PDRN is a skincare ingredient; injectable PDRN is a clinical procedure.

Is PDRN vegan or halal?

Salmon-derived PDRN is not vegan. On halal status, fish is generally permissible, but formulations vary and certification differs by product. Check the specific product listing or contact us if this matters for your purchase.

Where to start

If you want one product, make it a PDRN serum with peptides. If you want a routine, a kit keeps the formulas designed to work together. And if you are targeting something specific, browse our Hydrating, Anti-aging and Brightening collections.
